Coffee roaster partners with nonprofit to buy coffee beans
COSTA MESA, CA, January 14, 2020--Lion & Lamb Coffee Roasters, a social business and coffee roaster who donates 100% of their profits to charity, announced today that they are partnering with Kula Project. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Kula Project supports 150 coffee farmers in Rwanda through their fellowship program designed to eradicate poverty. Lion & Lamb Coffee Roasters will now purchase unroasted (green) coffee from them.
Kula Project purchases green coffee from the farmers who are a part of their fellowship program at Fair Trade market value, and then sells it to roasters like Lion & Lamb for a profit. Those profits then get reinvested into their Kula fellowship program, which helps them build better business and life skills. Lion & Lamb then roasts and sells the coffee, and donates their profits to various charities that fight poverty as well.
“This partnership is a perfect match. Kula provides a critical commodity to us, and we provide funding for their cause. Likewise, we sell that product and receive funding for our own cause. We hope partnerships like these are changing the way we look at fighting poverty through business”, said Rick Wheeler, Co-Founder of Lion & Lamb.
As part of their mission, Lion & Lamb Coffee Roasters intentionally seeks out relationships with other businesses or nonprofits who are cause oriented. In this case however, Kula Project’s founder Sarah Buchanan-Sasson found Lion & Lamb by chance.
“She told me that she was looking for samples of biodegradable coffee bags to sell their coffee in, and it turns out the manufacturer sent them our bags as a reference. We had a phone conference the next day”.
As a social business, Lion & Lamb focuses on using and providing sustainable products to generate funds to fight problems like hunger, thirst and homelessness.
“A dollar invested into a social business can be invested over and over again. We can source sustainable, fair trade products indefinitely and continue to reinvest those profit dollars to find new partnerships like Kula Project. We can then go one step further and sell these products we source, and subsidize our goals with our charity partners who are doing equally amazing work”.
